Where the Brahmaputra Meets the Mississippi 2006

A cultural show featuring premiere musical and dance performances

A charity event featuring dances like Flamenco, tap, Irish Ceili, hip-hop, Bollywood as well as improvisational performances .

Proceeds will be split jointly between PPCWC (Powderhorn Phillips Cultural Wellness Center) and SPADE (Society for Promotion of Appropriate Development Efforts) in Assam, India.

SPADE is a voluntary organization in north-east India, formed in 1994 by a group of likeminded persons to initiate and support development activities at the community level in the rural areas of Assam. Proceeds will support SPADE's work with disadvantaged, rural women of Assam

The Program

Folk Dance from Kerala Archana will present a Folk Dance from Kerala. Mohiniattom is a sensual dance with “Lassya” Movements which express feminine beauty and its pervading emotional mood or love. In this varnam, the nayika sends a message to her lord Padmanabha through her friend. She recollects all of her good experiences when her lord was present with her. She doubts whether he has forgotten her just like King Dushanta forgot Shakundala. She compares how she met her lord for the first time with Shakundala’s acquaintance with her lover.
Archana Nair (16) has been trained in three different Indian classical dance forms such as Mohiniattom, Bharatnatyam & Kuchipudi from the age of five. In 1999 Archana got her “Nritha Rani” title during the Interstate Dance Festival held in Chicago. In 2002 she won the “Kalathilakom” in FOKANA convention and also was crowned “Miss FOKANA” in 2004.She had her several dance performances in India, USA & Canada.
Zorongo Flamenco by Sachiko Guajilas is a palo (a style of song in flamenco term) that was originally brought back from Cuba to Spain and reintegrated into flamenco. It's got much aire (feeling) of hot and moist Cuban coasts. Sachiko will be accompanied by David Elrod on flamenco guitar.
Sachiko has studied Flamenco dance in Spain, the U.S. and in Japan. She currently is a company member and teacher of Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre and School in Minneapolis. She has performed with Zorongo Flamenco and Theatre de la Jeune Lune, as well as Michael Hauser's Cuadro Flamenco and FUEGO Flamenco. Tap Dance Kaleena Miller will present a tap dance, an a capella solo previously seen on the show "Scuff Marks." Kaleena will graduate from the U of M- Twin Cities this spring with a BFA in Dance. She recently choreographed, directed and performed in "Scuff Marks" at Old Arizona. She has studied under scholarship in NYC with Heather Cornell and worked with Roxane Butterfly in "Naari - The Woman". Kaleena also dances with "Buckets and Tap Shoes" and "Dance in the Dark", and has appeared in industrials for Target Corp., Best Buy, Creative Memories, and Carlson Corp. She has appeared onstage with local hip hop acts Omaur Bliss and Yoni. Kaleena also teaches tap and jazz around town.
Hotto Pay Aise Baat Mea R.G.K Dance & Fitness Studio will present a fun, lighthearted dance mix of Gipsy, old and modern style dance. It is about a girl who flirtatiously engages her lover by saying that she has some secrets simply to catch his attention.

Sara McCay's dance This dance is an improvisational ceremonial exploration of Nordic mysticism based upon the folkloric figure Paladin. A supernatural warrior sometimes depicted as a knight with a sword on a magical steed or unicorn. This evening, I will be on the earth with a piece of wood. A Paladin is uniquely known for her special spell craft against the Undead.

Geet Kumari (Indian Dance) Geet Kumari will present a dance that is a remix from Caribbean and Indian heritages.
GirlISH (break dance) Chandara Pen and Patag Xiong Twin Cities B*Girlz ready to break it down with a mix of old school and modern hip hop that will make you want to bust a move with an exciting performance.
Hindi Film Dance by Aishwarya Aishwarya will be performing a Hindi Filmi dance set to the song Nimbooda from the movie "Hum Dil Day Chukay Sanam." Aishwarya is a 9th grade student at Nicollet Junior High in Burnsville. She has performed at the Festival of Nations for the past several years. Aishwarya has also performed at the Festival of India, the Asian Heritage Dragon Festival at Lake Phalen and Camp Masala at University of Saint Thomas. Aishwarya teaches dance at the School of India for Languages and Culture.
High-Cauled Cap & Faery Reel (Irish dance) Suin Lowry and Irish Dance Group called Na Cait Ag Rince (pronounced "Nuh CATCH egg RINK-yeh") will be performing two dances - the first called The High-Cauled Cap, an eight-handed reel, and the second, Faery Reel, a progressive dance for dancers in groups of three. The High-Cauled Cap will be danced to music by Cherish the Ladies, and the Faery Reel to music by Altan.

Ceili dancing is informal Irish dancing, done at social gatherings by people of all ages. The dancers are John Burns, Sue Burns, Jan Casey, Mike Casey, Lisa Conway, Mike Cunniff, Patty Cunniff, Beth Engelking, Elizabeth Gross, Doug Jones Kathi Jones, Suin Lowary (bean a tí), Sally Peters

Dhom Macha Ley (Bollywood) This is a fast beat, modern Hindi bollywood film song performed by R.G.K Dance & Fitness Studio’s students. All of heaven and earth are elated. They come together and rejoice to celebrate the New Year. Come party with us…..

Kenna Black Pearl (Hip Hop) Black pearl is an all female hip hop dance troupe. Bp has been performing together for over 10 years and has created a collaborative piece of choreography entitled "one thing." the piece is a high energy celebration of the beauty of the female form and the creativity of black women.
